Complex Estate Planning

Client Centered

A client who recently lost her husband found herself in a complex estate situation.  Upon the husband’s passing, an estate tax return was required which necessitated the valuation of all assets in their extensive estate.  The estate included a valuable home along with over 100 rare books, artwork, savings bonds and investment assets.

The BVB group worked with the CPA and estate attorney to consolidate and value the investment assets.  The estate plan included a large charitable donation resulting in tax deductions that exceeded the surviving spouse’s income.  To optimize the deduction, a large conversion of assets from the IRA to the Roth was made resulting in very little tax while sheltering over $2MM from future income tax.

After a couple years had passed, the client decided to move across the country to be closer to family.  Needing help with the move and with significant value in personal property, a member of the BVB Group flew out to visit the client, help pack boxes and sort through documents to save or shred.  Due to the high value of personal property that was being moved, we also helped coordinate insurance coverage for the property being moved.

After the move, the relationship with our client continues.  The complexity of the estate involves frequent monitoring of income and estate taxes as well as periodic modifications to the estate plan.  Through our ongoing relationship and understanding of the client and her needs, the BVB Group is able to provide comfort to our client in her decision-making process.
